Miles are the unit of measurement commonly used to determine the amount of use in a running/walking shoe. This unit of measurement is used because it familiar to runners and walkers. However, it is the number of midsole deformation cycles (steps) and the force applied (weight of user) that degrades the shoe’s midsole. Using miles as the unit of measurement can lead to miscalculations. The number of steps per mile can vary between users by as much as 800 steps per mile. The Shoe Odometer solves this problem by using steps to determine when a shoe’s midsole is estimated to be past its useful life.

More accurate than a pedometer. Read More…
Pedometers have inconsistent results. To count steps accurately, pedometers need to hang vertically from the waist, aligned over the knee. The Shoe Odometer’s results are consistent because it is worn on the shoe, the same way every time. The size or shape of the user does not interfere with the results.
Multiple layers of clothing can interfere with pedometer results.
Pedometers need the user to be wearing clothing with a waist or a belt. Read More…

There are a number of moving parts in a pendulum device. These parts can prematurely wear out before the rest of the pedometer. The Shoe Odometer is electronic and has only one moving part, an omni-directional motion sensor that has little chance of wearing out.
